Last week, Brooke from the SCEC team took the plunge—literally—at an incredible marine safety training, offered in partnership between Fishing Partnership Support Services and the Maine Lobstermen’s Association, designed to equip fishermen and coastal workers with life-saving skills. Held right on the water and packed with real-world simulations, this was no ordinary day on the job. Picture jumping into survival suits, launching flares, plugging holes in boats, fighting fires, and climbing into life rafts. Brooke did it all—and came out certified and smiling!

Other SCEC staff stopped by throughout the day to cheer her on and connect with some of the incredible folks making waves in our coastal communities.

We were lucky to meet amazing partners from Fishing Partnership Support Services, who are doing phenomenal work supporting the health, safety, and economic security of commercial fishermen, their families, and their communities across New England. We also connected with the inspiring team from Green & White Hope, who are focused on saving the lives of commercial fishermen and bringing every fisherman home to their families and communities—work that is so needed and deeply appreciated here in Downeast Maine.

The training wasn’t just hands-on—it was heart-forward. It reminded us just how tough, skilled, and resilient our working waterfront communities are. And how critical it is to make sure those who make a living on the water come home safe.

So proud of Brooke for showing up, diving in, and leading by example!
