2025 Opportunities Fair Recap

On Tuesday, May 13th, students, educators, and community members gathered at the Coastal Washington County Institute of Technology (CWCIT) for the 2025 Opportunities Fair—a vibrant, hands-on event designed to connect students in grades 6–12 with career, workforce, and educational opportunities across Downeast Maine.

From 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM, CWCIT’s parking lot was transformed into a buzzing hub of exploration and excitement, with 18 employers and industry professionals and 22 resource, workforce, training, and education partners on hand to share insights, tools, and inspiration.

Students from across the region asked thoughtful questions, discovered new possibilities, and connected with professionals across a wide range of fields—from trades and small business ownership to public service, higher education, and the military. It was a day filled with hands-on learning, meaningful conversations, and real-world inspiration.

An extra-special highlight came from Coastal Kids’ Preschool, who used the event as a learning opportunity. Their little ones dressed up in career-themed costumes, practiced using their manners and voices, and shared their dreams for the future—reminding everyone that career exploration starts young, and every voice matters.

Students had much to say about their favorite parts of the day—many loved meeting new people, learning about different jobs, and exploring hands-on activities. A few standouts included the K9 unit demonstration with Kia, learning about cars, crime scene investigations, seaweed, art, the Army, and playing BINGO while engaging with different exhibitors. One student summed it up best: “Everyone was very sweet 🙂

They also walked away having learned something new, like:

  • The importance of FAFSA and that you can get paid for training
  • Differences between kelp and algae, and how to dry seaweed
  • That trades are a strong career path
  • Awareness of harm-reduction tools, health supports, and community wellness resources
  • That there are many paths to success—even if you’re not sure what you want to do yet

“I love these types of events! When we create space for young people to explore, ask questions, and imagine what’s possible, we’re doing more than just hosting an event—we’re investing in the future of our communities. The goal of the Opportunities Fair was to show students that there’s a place for them here, in their own communities—and they ran with it. The energy, the curiosity, the conversations—it was incredible! This day wasn’t just about careers; it was about connection, confidence, and opening doors. I’m super proud and honored to have been part of something that brought so many people together and gave our youth the chance to explore all the opportunities available to them after high school.” Dodie Emerson, SCEC

The Opportunities Fair was coordinated by the Sunrise County Economic Council (SCEC) and CWCIT. This meaningful collaboration made the day possible, offering students a chance to dream big and see what’s possible in their futures. The connections made, knowledge shared, and inspiration sparked are sure to have a lasting impact on the region’s future workforce.
